Last tomatoes.. means last bruschetta

The farm's tomatoes were killed by last weekend's first frost. A few dozen tomatoes still lingered, and after serving our farm's CSA customers, I took the leftovers & made the last bruschetta of the year.

The last tomatoes of the season may not be quite as big an event as the first, but it still deserves something special.

A simple bruschetta, made with our farm's red tomatoes, our fresh basil & garlic, and seasoned with salt & pepper. Simple & delicious. Served over grilled garlic bread.

Good food, the best quality local farm ingredients, prepared simply... a celebration unto itself!

While most of my tomatoes are planted at the farm plot, I did keep a small backyard garden for my sons. Lets them play, pick, learn, and see things growing.

Speaking of picking, my 3 year-old now knows when a tomato is ripe! When he was 1 and 2, he would simply run through the garden picking all the green tomatoes off. Now that responsibility lies in my youngest who does it. No problem! That's why I planted over 150 plants at the farm. Those planted at home are strictly for fun.

My 3 year-old loves tomatoes! He eats them straight from the vine, like apples.

Ripe tomatoes!

We've been eating ripe tomatoes for about a week now. The first ripe tomato, on July 24, was a Silvery Fir Tree! I bought those seeds because they had a short maturation rate, and they didn't let down. Then, the next day, my Yellow Cherry plant produced a few ripe tomatoes as well.

Where are the pictures, you ask? Heck, most of those tomatoes didn't even make it home from the farm! They were eaten right on spot.

Oh my, there is absolutely nothing like ripe garden tomatoes.

Last jar standing

The last jar of canned garden tomatoes. I didn't get enough put up last summer. Sadly, he was used up long before this posting was published.

*sigh*. It's going to be quite a while until those new tomatoes come in.
