Black walnut harvest time!

I am harvesting black walnuts this weekend on the farm. The hulls are now mushy enough to slough right off in the field. The still-in-shell nuts are then dropped into buckets. Black walnut shells are so hard regular nutcrackers won't work. I showed 2 of my sons how to use a hammer & flat rock to smash the shells open. Oh wow, what fun for boys...they kept the smashing going for an hour or more and treated my husband and I to a couple handfuls of fruity black walnuts. Yum!
CSA shareholders will need to get their hammers ready - I am thinking black walnuts will make an appearance in your Thansksgiving shares!
