Kiwano Horned Melon

What do you think of this guy?  What is it?  A Medieval weapon or food?

It's called a Kiwano Horned Melon.  I saw it in a seed catalog and thought, "Why Not?  Looks cool!".  Of course I did.  I have over a dozen of them at the farm.  Unfortunately, they taste more like a cucumber than a melon.  The spikes are very sharp, but once cut open you can scoop out the insides with a spoon.  But who wants to eat the insides of a cucumber-tasting plant with a spoon?  It's mostly just filled with seeds - there is not much flesh inside them.  So... I don't think I'll grow this guy again.

Anyone care to try some?  You can always use them as a weapon or put them on your front porch at Halloween to scare away the children....    :-)
