It was the second week in June and I was out at my farm plot weeding.
I was all alone; it was before 9 am and the farmers weren't out working yet. Just me and pasture as far as I could see.
As I hoed the tomato rows I had a strong urge to look up. I don't know if I heard something; but for some reason I needed to look up.
My heart flew up into my throat as I saw a beautiful doe standing about 10-15 yards from me.
Now, although I live in a small rural midwest town... I do still live in town.
I've had many run-ins with deer but all have involved me sitting in a car either swerving to avoid them, hitting them, or yelling at someone else to avoid them. I've never been this close to one out in the open. All alone.
I wish I could tell you that I had a picture for you. Unfortunately, with my heart pounding and my hoe frozen in the air as the doe and I stared at each other, the last thing on my mind was reaching for the cell phone in my pocket to take a picture.
After we watched each other for a minute or two, she slowly walked away to the tree line and disappeared.
What a beautiful experience! What a feeling!
I'm glad it was a mild-mannered deer and not a skunk or something.
Now, although I don't have a picture of the actual deer that I encountered, I can tell you she looked just like this, lol: :-)
